2030 Challenge
Posted by admin, 4:23 PM

Cascade Built signed up for the 2030 Challenge last year; one of the first Seattle firms to do so. If you have ever had the opportunity to hear Ed Mazria speak about the role of buildings in climate change and the huge opportunities and responsibility we have in the building sector to control carbon emissions, I imagine you would also be inspired to sign up and commit to the goal.
So what does it mean? For all new construction built by 2010, it means a 50% reduction in GHG emissions. If you look at the target tables, and go down to the residential detached row, it shows maximum load of no more than 21.9 kBtu/Sq Ft/Yr. The energy modeling software we used for the latest project is called REM Rate, but is only available to professional HERS raters, and I’m not one, so all I have is their HERS score output number.
The Alley House scored a 51 on the HERS scale. THe range is 0 to 100, zero is using zero energy, and 100 being the norm for a code built home. So at 51, we are roughly at the 2010 goal of 50% GHG reduction.
