Housing Forum on May 20 in Seattle

“Housing Transformations: Density Done Right” is the theme of AIA Seattle’s 2019 Housing Design Forum, which is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 20 at Seattle Art Museum, 1300 First Ave.

According to the event announcement, designers of urban projects often advocate for “good density.” The program will ask what does that look like, and how can the planning, design and construction of housing options support vibrant communities. It will also consider equity, sustainability and livability in rapidly changing neighborhoods.

The program will include:

• “Social Occupation,” a keynote presentation by Lorcan O’Herlihy, founding principal of LOHA

• “Minneapolis 2040: Race, Place, and Equity,” a presentation by Paul Mogush and Heather Worthington, manager of community planning and director of long-range planning, respectively, at the city of Minneapolis

• Design case studies, including Granny Pad (Best Practice Architecture), The Roost (Neiman Taber Architects) and Pax Futura (Cascade Built and NK Architects)

• Othello Square: A Culturally Relevant Master Plan (HomeSight and Weber Thompson)

Weber Thompson is designing the apartment building (top) to be developed by Spectrum Development Solutions and Laird Norton. Its 176 units will be targeted at households making between 60 and 100 percent of the area median income and the building will include the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic. The building is one of four in the Othello Square project planned by nonprofit HomeSight and community partners kitty-corner to Othello Light Rail Station.

(Editor’s note: This story has been changed to clarify the name of the developers.)

NK Architects designed and Cascade Built developed Pax Futura (bottom). The 35-unit Passive House apartment building is at 3700 S. Hudson St. in Columbia City. The developer said it uses up to 80 percent less energy for heating and cooling than other similar-size conventional apartment buildings.

Cost for the event is $252 for members and $450 for nonmembers until May 8, and 15 percent more after that. Register at http://tinyurl.com/y2ytt9bx.
